Welcome to our Fire Members Self-Service website
The information on these pages is aimed at current and former members of the Firefighter’s Pension Scheme through Fire Authority or Fire and Rescue Service.
There are 3 variations of the Firefighter’s Pension Scheme:
•The Firefighters Pension Scheme 1992
•The Firefighters Pension Scheme 2006
•The Firefighters Pension Scheme 2015
The Retained Modified Scheme also exists as an annex of the 2006 Scheme for those Special Firefighter members who were offered the chance to buy back previous service and convert this to Special Modified membership.
The Firefighters Pension Scheme 2015 is the open Scheme which new Firefighter members will join. On 1 April 2015 many members of the 1992 Scheme and the 2006 Scheme were moved into the 2015 Scheme as they were not covered by protections. The 1992 Scheme and the 2006 Schemes are still available to those members who were granted tapered or protected membership of those schemes
Benefits you will receive as a member of the 2015 scheme
- Pension payable from age 60
- Ill-health pensions
- Injury award
- Death grant
- Survivors pension for a spouse, civil partner or nominated partner and any eligible children
- Option to take a lump sum upon retirement up to a quarter of your pension
How can I join?
FPS 2015 is the occupational pension scheme available to operational firefighters first appointed on or after 1 April 2015.
Serving firefighters appointed before this date may already have pension rights in an earlier Firefighters' Pension Scheme, i.e.
- the Firefighters' Pension Scheme 1992 ("FPS 1992"), or
- the Firefighters' Pension Scheme 2006 ("FPS 2006") or
- the Firefighters’ Pension Scheme for retained modified members (“Modified FPS 2006”)
If you want to start paying pension contributions and become a scheme member, you must contact your Fire Authority in writing by sending a letter, which has to be signed by you. Or, if sending it electronically, your e-mail has to contain the phrase “I confirm I personally submitted this notice to join the Firefighters' Pension Scheme”.
You will then be sent further information on the scheme by your employer, including a Membership form to complete, and will be enrolled into the New Firefighters' Pension Scheme from the next available pay date. The form that they give you should, once completed, be returned to the Leicestershire County Council Pension Section, whichever of the three local Fire Authorities that you work for (Leics, Derbys or Notts)
How much will I pay?
Your contribution rate is based on your full time equivalent pensionable pay. Your employer also pays towards your retirement benefits. The different rates have been set for 2015 through to 2018
